Strengthening MFA with a Physical Security Key

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a powerful and secure way to enhance the security of your accounts. MFA is a second form of verification by becoming an extra line of defense that ensures you are who you say you are.

However, not all MFA methods are created equal. Some are stronger, some are more convenient, and some strike a great balance between the two.

You're probably familiar with SMS codes, authenticator apps, or biometric scans as forms of MFA. They've been the go-to methods for a while, each adding an extra layer of security by requiring something you know (like a password), something you have (like your phone), or something you are (like your fingerprint). The problem with these methods of MFA is they are not always secure.

A less popular form of MFA that is significantly more secure than traditional MFA methods is a Physical Key. This is exactly what it sounds like, a physical key that uses your fingerprint as a second form of authentication.

What is a Physical Key

Physical security keys are small devices that look like USB sticks and make MFA more secure. Unlike traditional methods like SMS codes or authenticator apps, physical security keys are tangible objects that you must have to access your accounts. And being physical devices, they can't be easily hacked or manipulated, making them a better option for protecting important accounts and sensitive information.

Using a physical security key is simple. Once you have the key, you will have the option to set up your MFA on your accounts with the key. You can distribute these devices to your employees or clients, and they just need to plug the key into their computer's USB or USB-C port to verify their identity. We recommend doing this on all accounts but highly recommend using them on sensitive accounts like email and financial accounts.

Section 4: Advantages Over Other MFA Methods

Physical security keys have significant advantages over other MFA methods. Unlike SMS codes that can be stolen or authenticator apps that may be attacked by viruses, physical security keys are immune to these issues since they are tangible objects you hold in your possession. We recommend getting an air tag to attach to the key to keep track of it and avoid it getting lost or in the wrong hands.
